What can we tell you about Ashok Patel?
He can’t boast of having a basketball player's height, nor Hollywood good looks, or a head full of hair.
But he can boast about studying finance, including time value of money, net present value, discounted cash flow, systematic risk, unsystematic risk, standard deviation, beta, CAPM model, portfolio theory, Sharpe ratio, and more. He also reads widely on finance: Warren Buffett, Peter Lynch, Philip Fisher, Ben Graham, Templeton, and others. To keep up, he feasts on financial magazines, news, videos, and social media sites on and on.
Does Ashok feel sorry for his nerdiness? Incidentally, Ashok means ‘without sorrow.’ Hindus name their children after the great Hindu emperor, Ashoka, in the 3rd century BC.
Fine! He keeps his nose in the books, but can he deliver a return on the investments?
Of course, he cannot guarantee he will replicate the past performance. Why? Because he cannot transform himself into an Oracle or Sahadeva, a Hindu god who knows the future.
He reads Gandhi every day, including ‘The Gospel of Selfless Action: Or, The Gita According to Gandhi.’ which acts as a blueprint for his investment success. A few shlokas from the text, like ancient wisdom of Star Wars dialogue George Lucas style:
“But he, O Arjuna, who keeping all the senses under control of the mind, engages the organs in Karma yoga without attachment — that man excels.” Lord Krishna guides Arjuna in Karma yoga, ‘selfless action performed for the benefit of others’.
“Who owns attachment nowhere, who feels neither joy nor resentment, whether good or bad comes his way - that man’s understanding is secure.”
Ashok, with abhyas, diligent practice of ancient wisdom, wants to create a win-win situation for the investors and Pavaki Capital.
Can he boast education at elite colleges on the east coast? No. But he can boast blessings and compliments from his patients such as, ‘You are truly an angel in disguise’. Please check out yourself here.
Who gets credit for his success? His wife of many years duration; he will not tell you how many years he has been married because he does not want to reveal her age indirectly and make her mad.
Ashok and his wife enjoy living in colorful Southern Colorado in this great ol’ USA. As he wears the same old clothes, out of fashion and fad, his two sons do not want to be seen with him. Before you label him stingy, call him an environmentalist - judiciously using our finite resources on the earth.
Ashok and his wife possess fond memories of their interactions with community members - whites, blacks, Hispanics, American Indians, and others. In their business, over the course of 30 years, they have hired numerous employees - 90% women and 10% men.
So Ashok has been investing satisfactorily for the last 35 years, besides helping and healing thousands, raising two sons with his wife, contributing to the community, living a simple normal life, and driving so carefully that he has garnered no driving tickets so far.
Ashok will invest others' money as if it is his own. Why? He is putting his hard-earned dollars in the same pot as the investors.
After his fellowship at National Jewish Health, Denver, he passed his board successfully. With ongoing continuing medical education, he keeps his board certification in Allergy and Immunology current.
